The toenail laser is the newest innovation that we offer at our office. Studies have shown an 88% success rate in the treatment of fungal toenails (Onychomycosis) with the laser method. What the laser does is basically penetrates the toenail plate and kills the underlying fungal infection with no side effects. Patients may experience a warming sensation on their toenails but not a painful experience. In the literature the average patient will require 1-2 treatments for complete resolution of the fungus.
The office procedure will now be described in detail. The first thing I do for the toenails is trim the nails with a nail nipper and then grind them down with a special Dremmel. Once the toenails are flat, I wipe them off with alcohol. Now it is time for the actual laser procedure. Both the patient and I wear special safety glasses during the procedure. The great toenails are treated for roughly 2 minutes each. The smaller toenails are treated for roughly 1 minute each. The procedure really does not take more than 20 minutes from start to finish. Pictures are taken at the beginning of the treatment and then will be taken again 6 weeks later. The patient will leave without pain and take home a bottle of Formula 3 topical to apply to their toenails twice per day for the next 3 months. It takes the average toenail 3 months to grow from start to finish. If athlete's foot is present, the patient will also paint the Formula 3 on the affected portions of the foot and web spaces. The key is preventing the fungus from returning and reinfecting the toenails. The patient will return to my office in 6 weeks for a followup. At this point I will determine if another treatment is necessary.
I recommend spraying Lysol in all of your shoes and applying antifungal foot powder in the socks. Fungus likes a warm, moist environment. Keeping the feet dry is the key. For patients with perspiration issues I recommend applying spray deodorant on the top and bottom of both feet. Make sure to apply bleach to the shower to kill all surface fungus.
I have tried to keep the cost down as much as possible. My office charges several hundreds of dollars less than the going rate in Baltimore and the DC area. *** If you have a family member and/or friend who wants to have the treatment on the same day, a discount will be given for all parties involved. If patients need any more than one treatment the discount is even greater.
My goal is a 100% success rate and I will do everything in my power to make the toenails look great again.
***Note: If there is any question whether or not fungus is present a culture (PAS stain) will be performed by Strata Labs. If any toenail is thick due to chronic trauma/damage and not fungus, the toenail laser will not work.
Many primary care physicians do not want their patient taking oral Lamisil (Terbinafine) for the toenail fungus due to potential liver risks. Many patient are on cholesterol medicine and cannot take Lamisil.
If you have any questions about the procedure or pricing please contact the office at 410-208-6237
Thank you very much for your interest and I look forward to seeing you in the future.
Sincerely,
Eric Jamrok, D.P.M.
